As pretty as fancy mechanics are, typically pendulums use a knife edge pivoting on a surface or a very thin metal spring which flexes back and forth. Mechanical linkages sap energy from the system through the extra friction involved with multiple parts, and in a timekeeping device this is bad both for accuracy and power consumption. The simpler the better, really.
